Synergy of contraction refers to the normal harmonious, coordinated and efficient contraction of all regions of the heart yielding optimal ejection of fluid. Abnormalities of synergy of contraction are referred to as dyssynergy of contraction.

Effect of dyssynergy of contraction on myocardial performance

The uncoordinated contraction of all regions of the heart results in reduced stroke volume and thus cardiac output.

Manifestations of abnormal synergy of contraction

Abnormal ventricular activation will occur with some types of arrhythmias, such as premature ventricular complexes (PVCs), or intra-ventricular conduction abnormalities, such as bundle branch block (BBB).

Effect of the autonomic nervous system on synergy of contraction

The sympathetic nervous system can promote ventricular dysrhythmias. The potential influence of the autonomic nervous system on intra-ventricular conduction is more complex, with both sympathetic and vagal influences on various conduction tissues.
